Who Becomes a Partner?

Some Partners are new to philanthropic giving, while others have a history of either personal or foundation giving. All want to be involved in making a difference. Partners typically join SVP for three reasons:

  • To invest their money and time in social challenges, and to see the impact of that time and money leveraged by pooling it with other donors.

  • To learn more about their local nonprofit community, and how grantmaking and hands-on volunteering work.

  • To be involved in a model of collaborative decision-making with other Partners and with local nonprofits, as well as the venture capital principles in SVP's approach.

Partner Involvement

Partners can scale their level of involvement from money-only to one-time events, from discreet projects to ongoing commitments (typically 6 to 12 months).  Currently about 30% of SVP Partners are "money-only," while 70% volunteer their time in some capacity.  When a Partner joins SVP, he or she fills out a Volunteer Profile that describes their interest, skills, available time, and professional background. The Executive Director then works with each Partner to find the best possible fit for his or her skills and availability in three main areas:

  • Serving on a Grant Committee to either choose a new round of Investees or determine ongoing funding for existing Investees.

  • Joining a Working Group to build and manage SVP's internal infrastructure. Working groups tackle database & web site support, partner recruiting, partner education, and partner groups.

  • Volunteering to work directly with an Investee

The entire Partnership comes together only twice each year at a Spring and Fall Partners' Meeting.  Otherwise, Partners work in small teams that focus on specific tasks.  Partners also meet up at Partner Education events throughout the year.

Become a Partner

Partnership entails a minimum commitment of $5,000 a year for two or more years (all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by current law). Corporate sponsorships and matching gifts can be used to make up the annual contribution.

Becoming a partner is easy:

  • Fill out and print the Volunteer Profile

  • Mail your Volunteer Profile, along with your first year's commitment of $5,000 (you can pay by check or with stock) to the following address:

After you complete these steps, an SVP staff member will be in contact to help you get plugged into SVP and get connected with other partners.
