Volunteer Opportunities
Recognizing that engaged partners are at the heart of SVPC, our goal is to provide opportunities for every interested partner to give of their time, creativity and expertise.
________________________________________________________________________________ Volunteer opportunities for and/or with SVPC Investees:
Partners For Success (a partnership between Communities in Schools and SVPC): A partnership that helps connect area businesses, faith communities, civic groups and other organizations to at-risk students at targeted Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools with the ultimate goal of helping young people stay in school, successfully learn and prepare for life.
o Form a Partnership: Help introduce and form partnership between a high poverty school and a place of business, church and/or civic group where you have a personal contact (help will be provided by the Partners for Success advisory group).
o Join the Partners For Success Advisory Committee: Need one to two Partners to join this group (made up of CIS staff and SVP Partners) that meets approximately six times/year to assess the progress of the program and assist in the planning. In addition, each committee member is focused on one high-need elementary school, working to open doors to potential business/faith partners.
ASTI (All Star Teacher Initiative): A five-year program of grants, study programs and professional development opportunities designed to attract, reward, train and retain excellent teachers for every classroom in the school (implemented at East Mecklenburg High School). o ASTI Expansion: Serve on group to explore creating an overarching foundation to expand this successful program to other schools.
H.E.A.R.T. (Helping Ensure Academic Results through Tutors): A math tutoring program being piloted in three high-need CIS elementary schools. The program will provide tutors with the information and tools they need to work independently with at-risk students. The goals are to help struggling students and to increase the retention rate of tutors.
o Tutor in one of the three pilot elementary schools once a week (third grade only):
1. Allenbrook
2. Bruns Avenue
3. Rama Road.
o School Liaison: Join another SVP Partner to be the school liaison for one of our three pilot schools, providing coordination and communication among tutors, the CIS site coordinator and SVP. School liaisons would also serve on the steering committee that oversees the entire program.
o In response to the capacity needs of HCHR (to be determined), SVP will provide assistance among the broad areas listed below.
1. Mission, vision, strategy and planning
2. Program design and evaluation
3. Legal affairs
4. Marketing and communications
5. Information technology
6. Fund development
7. Human resources
8. Leadership development
9. Financial management
10. Board leadership.
Homeless Resource Center: An initiative being explored to develop a center dedicated to the coordination of social services for the homeless and near-homeless.
o Participate in a collaborative effort in the community to bring this initiative to fruition
Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) Work Groups: An evidence-based intensive home visiting program that improves the health, well-being and self-sufficiency of first-time, low-income parents and their children. NFP nurse home visitors provide education and family support during the child’s first two years, working to improve pregnancy outcomes, child health and development and the economic self sufficiency of the family.
SVPC has funded an NFP project director to develop a strategic plan for expanding, implementing and sustaining the capacity of the NFP program in Mecklenburg County. Work groups have been formed to support and move forward with various aspects of the planning and implementation.
o Work Group for Funding Strategies: Assist in developing overall funding strategy for NFP expansion in Mecklenburg County with an initial focus on local funding opportunities.
o NFP event planning: Need one to two Partners to work with project director and Care Ring (NFP implementing agency) to explore fundraising event(s), large and small.
o Work Group for Nurse Workforce Development: Assist in a plan to ensure an adequate, qualified pool of nurses with an emphasis on enhancing public health curriculum offerings for nurses and adequate support to retain nurses.
o Work Group for Community Support Services: Identify and connect NFP with the appropriate community agencies to improve access to supportive services including housing, child care, education, job skills and mental health services.
o Host one of the monthly support groups for NFP mothers: Provide refreshments and/or location for a one to two hour meeting of 25 – 40 mothers.
Volunteer Opportunities within SVP:
Serve on an issues committee: Research the community needs and develop investment opportunities within the following issue areas:
o Public Education
o Affordable Housing
o Healthcare
o Environment
Serve on an SVPC internal committee:
o Recruitment/Orientation: Assist in development of recruitment/orientation strategy for new and prospective partners, and help coordinate related events
o Marketing/Communication: Help devise overall marketing, communication and outreach strategy to fulfill SVPC’s goals
o Partner Education: Research partner’s educational interests and help develop calendar of events on philanthropy and community issues
o Special Events: Plan and implement special events including partner socials (2/year),and provide logistical assistance for recruiting and educational events
o Host a recruitment party and/or educational event in your home (with assistance from special events committee)
